Blood pressure monitor

Blood pressure monitor

At CPR-Help you will find blood pressure monitors from well known suppliers such as Yonker, and others. Make sure to choose a blood pressure monitor that meets the same requirements that the healthcare system places on its equipment. Our blood pressure monitors are used for both personal and medical purposes.

How a blood pressure monitor works

A blood pressure monitor works by measuring the pressure at a specific point on the body - most often on the arm. Because the blood pressure is the same all over the body, you do not always need to measure in the same place. Blood pressure is measured in millimeters of mercury, also known as mm Hg.

When doctors talk about blood pressure, they will mention two numbers. For example, one might say "blood pressure is 120 over 80". That is because you measure the pressure on two occassions. The first measurement indicates what the blood pressure is when the heart pumps the blood to the body. That is when the pressure is at its highest. The second measurement shows what the blood pressure is when the heart relaxes and is filled with blood.

Why use a blood pressure monitor?

The blood pressure is a very important measurement for those wanting to keep an eye on their health. A blood pressure that is too low or too high for a long time can be dangerous. A blood pressure monitor lets you see proof that your blood pressure is at a reasonable level in a relatively easy and fast way. Furthermore, being able to take the measurements at home, without visiting a health center, is an advantage of course.

By routinely measuring your blood pressure every day you will see quickly if the blood pressure is slowly but surely increasing or decreasing. Then you can act early and visit a health center in good time.

If the blood pressure should be way too high or too low, the blood pressure monitor gives a warning and you can then reach out to professionals to get examinations and follow-ups.

How do you use a blood pressure monitor?

The blood pressure monitor is often fastened around the arm and then pumped up with air to sit as tight as possible around the arm. Today, most blood pressure monitors have automatic inflation, which means you just push a button for it to be pumped up.

When the air is pumped it will only take a second for the blood pressure monitor to show results on the display. Many blood pressure monitors also have a memory function so that you can see historical metrics and thus see and detect trends in your blood pressure.

Before you measure your blood pressure

It is important to be relaxed when measuring blood pressure. Therefore, be sure to sit down and rest for at least 5 minutes before performing the measurement. Caffeine can cause blood pressure to temporarily rise and your readings to be misleading. Do not drink coffee or tea just before measuring your blood pressure. Make sure it has been at least 30 minutes since the last cup.

Nicotine also affects blood pressure. Avoid cigarettes and snuff (dip/snus) at least 30 minutes before taking your measurement.

Avoid physically straining activities before measuring your blood pressure. Establish a routine to measure your blood pressure after you have had a quiet time. If you take daily walks, be sure to take the measurement before a walk.
